As we immerse ourselves in the spirit of Teacher Appreciation Week, I find myself reflecting on the profound impact teachers have had on my own life and the countless lives they touch every day. Today, I invite you to join me in celebrating the remarkable contributions of teachers, particularly those who impart the beauty and richness of world languages.

For me, teaching has always been more than just a profession—it’s a calling deeply rooted in the desire to make a meaningful difference. Over the span of 23 years, I had the privilege of standing before high school students, first in the vibrant streets of Barcelona, teaching Catalan, and later in the diverse classrooms of Chicago, teaching Spanish. Through these experiences, I witnessed the transformative power of education firsthand.

Two years ago, I embarked on a new chapter of my journey, joining a university department in my state dedicated to shaping the next generation of world languages teachers. It’s been an honor to contribute to this noble cause, knowing that each teacher we prepare has the potential to impact countless lives.

As educators, we hold a unique position of influence, shaping not only the minds of our students but also the very fabric of our communities. World languages teachers, in particular, play a vital role in fostering global competencies—skills that transcend borders and cultures. Through the mastery of languages, our students gain not only the ability to communicate but also cultural empathy, creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills—essential tools for navigating the complexities of the 21st century.

This week, as educators across the nation celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week, and gather to express our gratitude, let us acknowledge the profound impact teachers have on the world, all teachers. Each lesson taught, each connection made, has the power to shape the future in ways we may never fully comprehend.

To all the dedicated, passionate, and unwavering teachers out there, I extend my deepest gratitude. Your tireless efforts do not go unnoticed. Together, we make a difference. Together, we inspire. Together, we shape the future.
