Note to the Reader
In celebration of the Fourth of July, Independence Day, I am excited to publish a brief paper I wrote titled “Forging Progress: Assessing the USA’s Impact on International Affairs and the Global Stage.” I wrote this paper in response to discussions I often have when I visit my home country, where some folks challenge the position and influence of the USA on the global stage. I always welcome these discussions and aim to defend the positive role the United States has played in global affairs, especially since World War I. My intent in writing this paper was to articulate some of the thoughts, arguments, and claims I frequently use to defend America’s role in international affairs. While I acknowledge that nothing is black and white, I firmly believe that, when all factors are considered, the influence of the United States in advancing humankind has been overwhelmingly positive.

The paper is divided into seven parts, including an abstract, an introduction, and a conclusion. This is not an academic paper but rather a result of my personal reflections on the issue. No formal research was conducted in writing this paper. I will publish the paper according to the following schedule:

  • June 3, 2024: Abstract and Introduction
  • June 10, 2024: 2) Historical Contributions and Rebuilding Efforts, and 3) Defeating Totalitarianism (found here)
  • June 17, 2024: 4) Contributions to Global Peace and Stability, and 5) Economic Prosperity and Innovation
  • June 24, 2024: 6) Challenges and Self-Reflection, and 7) Alternative Systems
  • July 1, 2024: 8) Conclusion

I hope you find this series thought-provoking and engaging.

1. Introduction

In the intricate tapestry of global geopolitics, the role of the United States stands as a dynamic force that has shaped and reshaped the contours of international relations. This paper embarks on a comprehensive exploration of the USA’s contributions and challenges within the realm of global governance, traversing a landscape marked by historical reconstruction, the defeat of totalitarian regimes, commitment to global peace and stability, economic prosperity, and innovation. As we delve into the multifaceted layers of the USA’s capitalist system, we acknowledge its imperfections, engage in self-reflection, and consider alternative systems, weaving a narrative that recognizes both the strengths and complexities of America’s influence on the world stage.

Our journey begins with an examination of the post-World War II era, where the USA’s unwavering commitment to reconstruction, exemplified by the Marshall Plan and the rebuilding of Japan, set the stage for a new world order. The defeat of totalitarian regimes during World War II not only liberated oppressed nations but also laid the foundations for the establishment of democratic values, a testament to the USA’s role in shaping the course of history.

Moving forward, we navigate the landscape of global peace and stability, exploring the USA’s contributions through organizations like the United Nations and its steadfast support for NATO. In doing so, we acknowledge instances where actions may have contributed to instability, engaging in a nuanced reflection on the complexities of international relations. The capitalist system, a beacon of economic prosperity and innovation, comes under the spotlight, showcasing the interconnectedness that fuels global progress. We confront the challenges inherent in this system, address issues of inequality and sustainability, and demonstrate a commitment to adaptive policies that strive for inclusive prosperity.

Amid this exploration, we acknowledge the imperfections and mistakes that accompany any system, engaging in a candid self-reflection that underscores the USA’s resilience in adapting policies for the greater good. Finally, we turn our gaze towards alternative systems, considering the merits and drawbacks of models proposed by critics, offering a nuanced analysis that accounts for issues of human rights, individual freedoms, and economic disparities.

In essence, this paper serves as a panoramic lens, capturing the essence of the USA’s multifaceted role in global affairs. It invites contemplation on the intricacies of governance, the delicate balance between power and responsibility, and the ongoing quest for a world order that fosters progress, inclusivity, and peace.
